Kirk and McCoy are trapped in time while an alien infestation threatens the Enterprise.

Synopsis: Kirk and McCoy are trapped in time while an alien infestation threatens the Enterprise.

Review: When a particularly nasty virulent strain of alien nanite's invade the Enterprise's computers. Kirk and McCoy wind up trapped in a nanite induced coma, which see them stuck in the middle of a realistic recreation of one of the American Civil Wars most bloodiest battles.

For me this was a fantastic episode, which really explored the deep bond of friendship between Doctor McCoy and Captain Kirk.

This was also the first time that we have really got to see Chuck Huber take centre stage as McCoy, and he does a pretty solid job of giving us a believable recreation of the much loved character without making it an impersonation of the DeForest Kelley version of the character.

The investigation into what has happened to put Kirk and McCoy into their coma state is pretty good, but is no where near as interesting or fun as watching McCoy and Kirk handle the day to day brutality of being in the middle of one of histories most bloodiest wars.

As you'd expect we get to see a degree of exasperation from McCoy having to deal with old world medicine where all that was available to relieve pain of amputation was a flask of whiskey and a piece of wood to bite on. But things get worse than that for Bones when he has to perform a quite serious operation on his Captain.

The guest characters in the episode were really well played and most viewers would probably would have latched onto the young home sick soldier, who throughout puts on a brave face in adversity and winds up becoming among the tragic dead. Another fun character was Pappy who was played by Blaque Fowler.

In terms of staging and production values its on the screen. The recreation of civil war battles was carried out pretty well considering the budget constraints that this fan series is done on.

The costumes were pretty good as well.

But what impressed me most about this particular episode was the music. It was mostly in the background as it should be, but there were some nice little bits of pieces to it.

I really enjoyed the music that played while Pappy was telling Kirk about the heroic young soldier that rallied the troops up in order to break the ranks of the rebels.

For me 'Star Trek: Continues' from both the writing and acting point of view is probably among the best 'Star Trek' fan series out there and is right up there with 'Star Trek: Phase II', which pretty much began the whole concept over 10 years ago.  And this episode only goes to show what can be done on a limited budget when you have the actors, passion and time to put out a solid piece of television.

You can watch the episode and judge for yourself below:
